John Bosch’s meditative documentary follows cult Louisville, Kentucky songwriter Paul K (called “The greatest unknown songwriter of his generation” by the Chicago Tribune) as his 1998 rock opera A Wilderness of Mirrors, about how an alien encounter precipitates one man’s descent into Job-like tribulations, starts to come bizarrely true in Paul’s own life. Musicians Glenn Kotche (Wilco) and Will Oldham are two of the cast of characters who play with Paul and play his songs in the film; Bosch, Gordon and Rizzo were also among sometime Paul K band mates. Recommended for fans of Townes Van Zandt, Palace Brothers, Pavement, and weird Americana.
